"Feel what you can't see"
Haptic sensor for blind user
Proof of concept
Create a new sense
Discovering about transhumanisme and the endless possibilities it offers made me think...
We got a prototyping project to do.
The exercice was to conceptualize a product, and build it as a working proof of concept.
Going from this initial idea, my team and I decided to focus on building a device for blind users, allowing them to "feel" obstacles from a distance.
The prototype concept was simple
ARDUINO COMPUTER
Programed accordingly
Battery
Two HAPTIC motors
Vibrating with a variable intensity.
One for LONG RANGE
Prevent from obstacles, give a sense of depth of field.
One for SHORT RANGE
Estimate precise distance, grab close by objects, recognize shapes.
From there, we could build the whole thing !

Ergonomy was especially tricky, putting all that on a hand.
The chosen design was made to bend alongside the hand lines without obstructing movements or sense of touch.
Also, I studied skin sensibility to find the most convenient space for the haptic motors.
Here's a little process video of the project.
Edited by Alexis Jouanneau
The closer an object gets, the stronger the vibration is.
The user can now "scan around" it's surrounding just by pointing at any direction
The brain is great at interpreting new imputs.
With time, it could even learn how to recognize shapes, depth, or movement from those vibrations !
We ended up with a working prototype, ready to be tested and presented !

The concept worked fine, but was very much open for improvements !

So I proceeded to design a second version, more practicable and adapted for a blind user.
This Version has :
A prototype made by...
And the projects stop there.
But being the most relevant project I've ever worked on, I do hope I'll get the chance to work on a V3 ;)
This Version has :
- The captor on the back
Not to obstruct the palm.
- A turn ON/OFF button
Under the thumb for an easy activation,
only when needed.
- The COMPUTER on the wrist
less weight on the hand.
And hidden under the sleeve for desrcetion.
- TWO different FABRIC textures
One is thick, to maintain the elements in place.
Other one is lighter, to ease perspiration and keep the sens of touch on the palm.
- A SLEEK and SLENDER design
To easily go through sleeves, reach the inside of a pocket etc...
"How could we easily build a device creating a new sense to be learn by the brain ?"
Timing was good, because soon enough...
A distance CAPTOR
Working like a bat echolocation, it serves as the "eye" of the device.
The control panel is equipped with indication in relief, to be apprehended from the tip of the finger by a blind user.

Hope you enjoyed the concept !
